Mustang was once an independent Kingdom, although closely tied by language and culture to Tibet. From the 15th century to the 17th century, its strategic location trade between the Himalayas and India. At the end of the 18th century the kingdom was annexed by Nepal.

Tiji is a fascinating annual three-day festival consisting of Tibetan rituals that celebrate the myth of a son who had to save the Mustang kingdom from destruction. The festival is indigenous to Lo-Manthang, Upper Mustang.

Tiji Festival is celebrated in Lo-Manthang (Upper Mustang) of Nepal. It is the most important spiritual ceremony which is influenced by Tibetan Buddhism. Tiji Festival is a three days long festival celebrated to mark the victory of Buddha’s incarnation over a demon. The ritual is known as the ‘Chasing of Demons‘.

Dorje Jono fought and defeated this demon and the festival celebrates his victory with prayer chants and colourful dances.

Itinerary

Tiji Festival Trek commences with your arrival to Kathmandu through the Tribhuvan International Airport. You will be greeted by Himalayan Trip, then transferred to your hotel. After lunch and refreshments, you will be oriented about the travel plan by your travel crew.

Next morning, you’ll wake up with the pleasant sound of bells from the neighboring temples. Soon after your morning breakfast, you’ll gather around and a travel leader will guide you to some of the most spiritual and religious sites in the valley.

All of these destinations are listed under the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Firstly, you'll visit the famous sights such as Syambhunath Stupa, Kathmandu Durbar Square, Patan Durbar Square, and Bhaktapur Durbar Square. You'll also visit Changunarayan Temple, Pashupatinath Temple, and finally, the Boudhanath Stupa.

You can have your lunch anywhere during the travel, as per your needs. After the sightseeing trip, we will give you a trek briefing and get you prepared for the tiji festival trek.

This day, we will take a flight to Pokhara. Alternatively, we can also arrange a ride to Pokhara via tourist bus. Either way, you’ll get enough time to explore the alluring Phewa Lake via walking along its coast or taking a boat to its other side.

You’ll get to spend the night in a deluxe hotel in the same city and experience its lively locality of Lakeside.

Early this morning, fly to Jomsom in Lower Mustang. It's a short but very exciting flight, as you pass through the Kali Gandaki Gorge and over to the 'other' side of the Himalaya.

After arrival in this little frontier town, embark on the three-hour hike to Kagbeni, where you'll stop for the night. While some people drive this way, walking towards Upper Mustang is a great prelude to the adventure that awaits you over the next few days.

You can spend the afternoon exploring Kagbeni, a wonderful ancient settlement, with its narrow lanes and earthen brick homes and monasteries, including a monastery that's more than 500 years old. If you're feeling energetic you can even take a small uphill hike for acclimatization and a view.

Yes, you can charge batteries en route. Charger should be brought. There are hot shower facilities as well. You may have to pay certain amount for both ($1-$2). Negotiate. Also, hot water facility could be free at lower elevation.

Are there ATMs on the way to Annapurna Base Camp?

No. There are no ATMs on this trek route. You will have to draw enough cash in Pokhara or Kathmandu. There are a number of ATMs in these cities. Everything is paid in Nepali rupees. So money should be exchanged before the start of the trek.

What about internet access?

Yes. Internet can be accessed in most places. Sometimes, there might be some technical problems. Internet in Nepal is not as fast as you are used to and at times you can just lose connection.

Is it necessary to hire Guides/trekking agency for Annapurna Base Camp trekking?

Not really. It depends on you. If you want, ABC trekking can be done independently. You could hire a guide and a porter by yourself instead of going through an agency or not hire a guide at all. Although, not having a guide can be a little problematic during off season.

It really depends on you. Is it your first time in Nepal? How confident are you of being able to find your way around? How pressed on time are you? If you go through an agency, it will be costlier but everything will be planned. You will only have to come, trek and return.

How much do guides and porters cost?

For Annapurna region, pay for guides range from $20 to $30 per day and porters take $15 to $25 per day.
